Service to Others as an Expression of Faith
By Rozmeen Bhai
Across the Ismaili community, voluntary service has long been one of the clearest expressions of faith. Giving one's time, knowledge and effort for the good of others is seen not as an extra, but as part of what it means to believe.
Time, knowledge and material resources
The tradition speaks of sharing all three. Not everyone can give money, but almost everyone can give time, and many can share a skill: teaching, organising, cooking, mentoring or offering professional advice.
Service beyond one's own community
True service is not limited to people who share our faith. Helping neighbours, schools and causes across the wider city reflects the belief that all of humanity is one family.
The quiet reward
Rozmeen Bhai often notes that service gives back more than it takes. It builds friendships, teaches patience and keeps one's own troubles in perspective.
Teaching children to serve
Children who grow up serving alongside their parents learn early that they have something to offer. That lesson lasts far longer than any lecture about values.
